The NBA season structure
The NBA regular season runs from October to April, with 30 franchises playing 82 games each. The top six franchises in each conference qualify automatically for the playoffs, while the seventh to tenth seeds play a play-in tournament for the final two spots.
The playoffs run from April to June, with four rounds of best-of-seven series culminating in the NBA Finals. The off-season runs from June to October, with the NBA Draft in late June, free agency in early July and the Summer League in July and August.
The European and Asian basketball calendars
The EuroLeague runs from October to May, with 18 clubs from 14 countries playing a 34-match regular season followed by a four-team Final Four playoff. The EuroCup runs in parallel, with a similar format but 20 clubs and a different playoff structure.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup is played every four years, with the next edition in 2027. The FIBA Continental Cups (EuroBasket, AfroBasket, FIBA AmeriCup, FIBA Asia Cup, FIBA Oceania Championship) are played every four years on a rotating schedule. The COMESPORTSBUZZ basketball desk covers the major international tournaments alongside the NBA and EuroLeague.
