ABOUT DESK Updated 18:42

An independent sports news desk.

COMESPORTSBUZZ is an independent sports news desk, founded in 2026 by a group of editors who wanted to do sports journalism without the gambling, fantasy-app or sponsor-noise chrome that has crept into so much of the modern sports media. The desk runs from newsrooms in Mumbai, London and New York, covering cricket, football, tennis, kabaddi and basketball.

DESK NOTE

How we hire

We hire editors who have spent at least five years on a sports desk at a recognised publication, and correspondents who have covered their beat for at least three years. We do not hire on the strength of personal social media following or content-creation metrics. The standards editor reviews every hiring decision.

WHAT WE WILL NOT DO

The editorial boundaries

Short, public, in writing.

ABOUT

HOW THIS DESK WORKS

How the COMESPORTSBUZZ desk operates

The editorial routine that runs every section of COMESPORTSBUZZ, from the morning brief to the corrections log.

The morning brief

Published at 06:00 IST, the morning brief summarises overnight football results, the day's cricket fixtures, the editor pick of the day and one correction from the previous day. The brief is written by the desk editor on shift, with input from the cricket, football and tennis correspondents.

The live desk

The live desk refreshes inside 30 seconds of every wicket, goal and set point. Score ticks, possession and run rate update on the same cadence as the official scorecard. The desk runs 24 hours, with overnight cover from the London and New York offices.

The corrections log

Every correction issued in the last 90 days appears on the corrections log, with the article link, the date of correction and the corrected text. The log is updated daily. We do not make silent edits.

The standards editor

The standards editor reviews conflicts-of-interest disclosures, signs off on the use of unnamed sources, and reviews every correction before it is published. The standards editor reports directly to the desk editor and has a separate escalation path to the publisher.

The data desk

The data desk maintains the live scoreboard, the standings tables and the verified stats referenced in every story. The data desk is staffed by two full-time editors and is supported by a network of stringers who cover regional cricket, lower-division football and the international kabaddi circuit.

The night brief

The night brief is published at 22:30 IST and summarises the day's results, the editor verdict on the day's three biggest matches, and a look ahead to the next day's fixtures. The night brief is written by the on-shift editor and edited by the standards editor before publication.

DEEPER COVERAGE

More from this desk

A closer look at the topics we cover most often.

The newsroom structure

COMESPORTSBUZZ runs a flat newsroom structure. There is no executive editor above the desk editor, and the standards editor reports directly to the publisher. The desk editor runs the day-to-day coverage, the standards editor reviews the use of unnamed sources, and the publisher signs off on the annual budget and the conflicts-of-interest disclosures.

The cricket desk is led by Aanya Kapoor, the football desk by Tom Marshall, the tennis desk by Lena Kim, the kabaddi desk by Nikhil Patil and the basketball desk by Daniel Vinter. Each desk has a primary correspondent and one or two stringers for lower-priority competitions. The data desk is led by Sara Reyes and supports all five sport desks.

The publishing calendar

The COMESPORTSBUZZ publishing calendar is built around the major events on the cricket, football, tennis, kabaddi and basketball calendars. The desk runs dedicated centres for the 32 biggest events on the calendar, and the homepage is refreshed every 15 minutes during a live event.

The morning brief is published at 06:00 IST, the night brief at 22:30 IST, and the corrections log is updated daily. The desk does not publish on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, but the live desk runs through both holidays with reduced staffing.

What else to know

The newsroom budget

COMESPORTSBUZZ is funded by a combination of display advertising and a small number of sponsored newsletters. The newsroom budget covers the salaries of the 14 full-time staff, the stringer network of 32 contributors worldwide, the technology infrastructure and the office space. The desk does not accept affiliate revenue from any sports operator, betting platform, fantasy app or ticket reseller.

The desk publishes a financial summary once a year on the about page. The summary includes the total revenue, the total cost, the surplus or deficit and the planned investment for the following year. The 2026 financial year saw a small surplus, which has been reinvested in the data desk and the live scoreboard.

How to work with us

The COMESPORTSBUZZ partnerships desk handles commercial enquiries. The desk works with brands on sponsored newsletters, branded content series and display advertising. The partnerships desk does not work with sports operators, betting platforms, fantasy apps or ticket resellers. The standards page has the full list of excluded categories.

For freelance contributors, the COMESPORTSBUZZ stringer network is run by the on-shift desk editor. The stringer network currently includes 32 contributors in 14 countries. New contributors are added when the desk needs additional coverage of a specific event or competition.
